Runescape Developer Jagex Working On New MMO

The website developmag has released an article, Runescape developer Jagex has revealed it is working on a brand new MMO due for launch in March 2009.

The details are as below:
The unnamed MMO was revealed by CEO Geoff Iddison during a panel discussion at today#DY#s GameHorizon Conference in Newcastle.
Dubbed #DY#Nextscape#DY# by Iddison, the game was said to incorporate as Runescape does, a variety of business and subscription models to drive consumer engagement, he said.

However, although the company has run its successful Runescape MMO since 2001, offering biweekly content updates with the new property due to join it early next year, Iddison said that Jagex#DY# real value isn#DY#t its IP, but its infrastructure.

“We#DY#ve got an infrastructure behind Runescape which is the real silver of the Jagex, the value of the company,” said Iddison. “It#DY#s not the game, the game is going to come and go,” he said.
“The infrastructure is the thing that can scale. Runescape has 10 years of good growth, but the infrastructure is infinitely scalable,” he added of Jagex#DY# vast operation of servers and online support teams.
Although Jagex employs 400 people at its Cambridge, UK HQ, only 25 per cent are dedicated to development. Half the staff are focused on content and support while the rest are dedicated to that infrastructure.

Runescape Celebration

Jagex is celebrating RuneScape’s 12th anniversary with a host of community competitions and in-game events.

The game launched its first public beta on 4th January 2001 and is one of the largest and longest running online games in the world. In the last twelve months has seen 486 million hours of gaming, and since the game launched there has been 200 million accounts created.

Mark Ogilvie, RuneScape Design Director, commented

2012 was filled to the brim with content updates both large and small. Last year saw flurries of graphical reworks of the popular areas of the game, bigger and better boss monsters, an overhaul of the combat system, new starting areas as well as the challenging task of introducing voice acting into the game. For me, the highlight of the year was undoubtedly witnessing the creation of the 200th Million RuneScape account, which secured the game’s place as the most played online game of all time. But 2013 is going to be even better.

RuneScape players have a lot to look forward to in 2013 as Jagex outline huge plans which will see an improved pure HTML5-powered version, two brand new skills, a Grandmaster-level quest, Wilderness Warbands, a Construction skill rework, an improved grouping system, and the ability to customise the game’s interface.

Birthday celebrations are taking place in-game with twelve player events planned for this weekend. More details can be found on the Runsescape site.

Player-Owned Ports Land in RuneScape

Jagex, maker of the popular MMO adventure game, RuneScape, has launched the highly anticipated Player-Owned Ports update, a high level content expansion which allows users to venture into previously undiscovered Eastern Lands.

The Player-Owned Ports update allows players to take full control of running their very own port, from which they can commission voyages to explore unmapped parts of the world. The expansion puts players in complete control of running their port, charging them to return this dilapidated area into the bustling centre of commerce that it used to be. By upgrading the buildings of the port, not only are they able to house more ships but they will also be able to attract a better class of captain and crew for their adventures.
The Player-Owned Ports expansion is crammed full of content and whilst unlocking everything a port has to offer and getting the best Captain and crew can take a significant of time and effort for a player, the rewards are more than worth it, with rewards ranging from high level crafting recipes to coveted eastern armour.

“Player-Owned Ports is something that our players have been looking forward to since it was announced at RuneFest last year,” said Mark Ogilvie, RuneScape Design Director. “It’s exciting for players on a couple of levels, not only are we allowing them to explore a whole new area of the map which comes with its own lore, monsters and races, but we’re also giving them another bit of the game which they can call their own. We’ve produced a large amount of low level content for our players recently, so we wanted to produce something for players who had higher levels and give them something that they could really get their teeth into.”

To mark the release members of the RuneScape development team have created their own comedy pirate themed video. Have a look below.

In the Apocalypse In the Apocalypse

There has been a lot of talk lately about the mythical (?) Zombie Apocalypse and we are not immune. In today’s Pokket Says, we take a look at exactly that in a “what if” kind of way. See what you think before weighing in with your comments.

Would this apocalypse be like in the movies and games that we play? I wonder this because I asked this question, in so many words, to my stream about a week ago. If the zombie apocalypse happened, would it be similar to DayZ? Would I not only have to be scared of the mindless, brain-eating monsters that aimlessly roam, but also be afraid of anything living? A lot of them said “yes” that I would have to fear living humans just as much, if not more.
